Driving Through The North Welsh Coast: Chester To Holyhead

What could be better than spending a sunny day touring the coast of North Wales? Look out at the glorious beaches, rugged welsh mountains and breathe in that fresh sea air. The route from Chester to Holyhead is particularly scenic, so to make the most of this we’ve broken down some gorgeous spots to stop at.

Chester - Talacre A 23.5 miles in distance, and taking about 50 minutes to drive, the main coastal route will take you north just across the river from the Wirral. Talacre is stunning destination in itself, enjoying the status of ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ (SSSI). It boasts impressive sand dunes and sits at the same footage above sea level as Hoylake.

Talacre - Llandudno From Talacre to Llandudno, your journey will be packed full of all the great attractions of the British seaside. From arcades chocked full of games, to fish and chip shops and ice cream vendors, there is plenty to do and see. If history interests you more, try the castle at Colywn Bay, or how about the Welsh Mountain Zoo? When you arrive at Llandudno, there are even more activities to choose from including cable car rides, tobogganing and skiing at the dry ski slope.

Llandudno to Bangor About 24 miles later you will arrive in the city of Bangor. Your journey will take you next to Snowdonia National Park, an area of outstanding beauty that can be explored if you wish to have a break from the coastal route. Bangor is one of the smallest cities in Britain, and boasts its own mountain and pier.

Bangor - Holyhead On the final leg of your journey there are two possible routes you can take: along the A55 or along the coast. The beaches on your way to Holyhead will be quieter than others like Rhyl and Prestatyn that you might have visited earlier on your trip. Holyhead doesn’t have to be the last destination on your journey; once you arrive there’s nothing to stop you crossing the Irish Sea to Dublin or Dun Laoghaire.
